Creating a Self Portrait with Lon Brauer

August 30 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

The one subject that we always have at our disposal is our own face. We control the time and place. And we know it better than any other object in the outside world. We see it in the mirror at the beginning of each day and it’s often the last thing we see before we get into bed.

Lon Brauer is going to give a one-day crash course introduction to self-portraiture. Although not something that can be easily taught in a single session, Lon is going to demonstrate some shortcuts and key concepts that can get you on the right track to your own exploration of portraiture.

Students are welcomed to use any medium they feel most comfortable with. Lon is going to be demonstrating with charcoal on paper.

Key concepts:

  • recognizing the big shapes
  • understanding structure
  • Finding planes of the face and head
  • Building value systems with charcoal and eraser
  • Line and value
  • Mark making

Held at the Freeburg Library

Saturday, August 30th from 10am – 4pm with one hour break for lunch.
