February Meeting CANCELLED

February 5 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The February membership meeting will take place on February 5th. Angela Burns will speak with the guild about her portraits.

Deciding by the age of 4 that she wanted to be an artist, Angela Burns discovered her love for portrait painting and Impressionism at varied art museums throughout her youth. She studied under the mentorship of master artist Brian Jekel in Pensacola, Florida, where she earned her MFA from Pensacola Christian College. She has worked with art galleries in Chicago, Denver, Champaign-Urbana (IL), Fort Collins (CO), and others over the last 10 years to publicly exhibit and sell her work. She has also exhibited in nonprofit spaces to support free and low-cost art education/awareness for children/adults in her community (Edwardsville, IL). Her art reflects her ongoing interest in the contemplative human figure and her exploration of the effects of diverse natural-light situations. Angela's style of painting could be called "realism with an impressionist bent" and is marked by rigor, sensitivity, and painterly expression. Angela’s work has been recognized and/or featured by the Oil Painters of America, American Artist Drawing magazine, Southwest Art magazine, the Southern Appalachian Artist Guild, the Strokes of Genius annual, and Manifest's International Drawing annual.

Artist Statement

I paint different things and people, but many times, I end up painting women or children caught in dreamlike moments. Once a daydreaming girl and now mom to a whimsical daughter, I see myself reflected in her faraway moments (and in the subjects I subconsciously select.) I like to think I am representing introspection more than isolation. We all need time to think, to observe, to pull away from the crazy of life and process what it happening. These are the people that show up in my paintings. And this is the experience I want to create for those viewing my artwork. I want people to accept the invitation to experience the wonder and whimsy that a child does, or to experience that feeling of far-and-away as they view a daydreaming subject. I also hope people will see the same beauty that I see in my subjects, will feel the soul behind the face, and will sense the incredible value that I believe is intrinsic to every human being.
