August Membership Meeting – Angela Burns
August 3 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
I’ve been working as a professional artist for the last 12 years, and I’ve been honored to have my work published nationally and internationally. My work has been featured in the International Drawing Annual, Southwest Art magazine, Strokes of Genius, and American Artist Drawing magazine. I've also been honored with national awards at OPA and SAAG exhibitions.
Art has been with me since the beginning. By the age of four, I had made up my mind to be an artist when I grew up. I've had the occasional detour here and there, but I have kept coming back to art.
I was a daydreaming kid. My idea of a perfect day was to create something, do some people-watching, and take in the sunset. As I grew, I sort of lived for these experiences of beauty. Now that I'm older, I think beauty in the natural world is not an end in itself but more of a window to the greater beauty I find in the world's Creator. C.S. Lewis comments of these brushes with beauty:
"For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited."
Beauty has a way of satisfying but also stirring more longing inside us. In my work, I'm most interested in exploring quiet energy and dreamlike atmosphere. Of creating invitations for people to experience beauty, longing, and joy alongside me.
I’ve had the privilege to live in 12 states and 2 foreign countries. My father was a US Army Ranger who taught me what excellence means. My mother noticed my early creative bent and encouraged me in two simple ways: she made sure I always had art supplies and took me to art museums wherever we traveled.
The Impressionists were my favorites on these trips, and I kept studying them (and their friends) through my undergraduate degree in Visual Arts and later my Master of Fine Arts degree.
After living like a nomad for most of my life, I’ve found a forever home in the Midwest (St Louis area). I've been blessed by an amazing husband and three beautiful (and spunky) daughters. I’m deeply grateful for the gift of life. In addition to painting, I enjoy coffee shops, long walks, travel, and time with family.
